There’s never been a better time to get into housing!

As a parent or carer, you want to be able to give young people the best advice you can on their future options in education, training and jobs.

Housing work can be both rewarding and varied, with potential employers throughout Scotland looking to recruit candidates who want to make a positive difference to people’s lives.

For a quick overview, read working in housing.

What kind of jobs are there?

It’s not just about housing management jobs. Housing organisations offer a much wider variety of roles than you might think, including in finance, accountancy, community development, policy work, IT, website development, corporate services and many other areas.

As well as building new homes, local authorities and housing associations are responsible for the repair and maintenance of existing homes, meaning there are also opportunities for young people who work in, or want to work in, the trades (plumbing, joinery, construction).

Jobs in housing highlights the variety of roles available, while housing employers profiles some of the organisations looking for the next generation of housing professionals.

What about qualifications?

Housing is a career where skills, competencies, values and attitudes can count for as much as qualifications and experience. Hear first-hand from those already working in the profession in our career stories section.

To help young people (and anyone else interested in a career in housing) on their way, there’s a wide variety of housing qualifications available. These range from Modern Apprenticeships to postgraduate qualifications. See qualifications for full details.

Learning doesn’t stop with a qualification. Most housing organisations support their staff with ongoing training and development, helping them to advance their careers.

What next?

Take a look at the information on our website.

Research local housing organisations to find out what type of opportunities are available.

Consider if qualifications are necessary (not everyone going into housing has one, but it can help).

Keep an eye on websites advertising housing jobs (see Where to find out more at the end of jobs in housing), so you know who’s looking for what.

Talk to a local careers advisor/schools careers guidance.

Have you considered a career in housing for them (and maybe for you too)?
