Working with DYW

Working with schools needs a light touch – it’s about building a relationship and getting the trust of teachers and pupils as early as possible in their education. It’s also about working with key partners, including DYW.

Just as you and your staff are the experts in housing, when trying to engage with young people it makes sense to work in partnership with those agencies who already have direct contact with schools and access to pupils.

DYW is an employer-led resource which connects employers and young people in schools and colleges across Scotland. The objective is to work with employers to give young people the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the workplace.

A total of 21 DYW Regional Groups operate across Scotland, providing detailed advice for young people, educators, employers and parents/carers. The Regional Groups are supported by DYW Co-ordinators, many of whom work in schools.

Contact your local Regional Group for advice and information on:

  • providing meaningful work placements

  • advertising Modern Apprenticeships

  • arranging site visits

  • delivering school talks

  • delivering a career talk within a classroom environment

  • taking part in employability activities

  • attending local careers fairs in schools and colleges

  • mentoring

  • curriculum development activities

  • providing support with employability skills, such as conducting mock interviews for pupils

  • delivering masterclasses on topics such as CV writing or interview techniques

  • providing Continuous Professional Development (CPD) sessions to teachers.

Are you engaging with your Regional DYW?

Regional DYW are sometimes managed by local Chambers of Commerce, which offer general support for businesses in their area.

Skills Development Scotland also provides opportunities to connect with local schools and colleges through its ‘Marketplace’, where you can let them know who you are and what you do. You can also organise workshops, talks, workplace visits or placements. Details available here.
